The Ford 10R140 was introduced for the 2020 model year and is currently used as Ford’s heavy duty truck transmission to be used in Super Duty F250 to F600 Series trucks. It can be found behind the 6.2 Liter and 7.3 Liter gas engines as well as the 6.7 Turbo Diesel. The 10R140 can be configured as a two wheel drive either with a slip yoke or a bolt on flange or as a four wheel drive version. It can also be equipped for Power Take-Off applications.

The 10R140 transmission is a 10-speed, step ratio rear wheel drive transmission that is controlled by a PCM for gas engine applications or a TCM for diesel engine applications. The 10R140 has ten forward speeds, one reverse speed, four planetary gear sets, one mechanical One-Way Clutch (OWC), six friction clutches, an upper valve body, a lower valve body with eight solenoids, and PCM or TCM controlled electronics. The 10R140 utilizes six shift (A-F) solenoids and one linear force solenoid for line pressure control.  The six shift solenoids in this transmission are Casting-Integrated-Direct-Acting-Solenoids (CIDAS). These are mechanical in nature in that no transmission fluid passes through them. CIDAS uses an armature/pin assembly that moves a valve in the main valve body to control hydraulic pressure.  Each clutch (A-F) is controlled by a corresponding shift solenoid (A-F). These solenoids are directly proportional in that zero current equals zero pressure and maximum current equals maximum pressure. If the power circuit to the transmission solenoids fails open, then all solenoids are failed electrically OFF, none of the clutch packs are able to engage and there is no fail safe operation.
